Pokémon Trading Card Game: XY—Steam Siege Information Portal

As a child of the 1980s, there was no
Pokémon growing up. Indeed, I would have been nearly graduated from high school when Pokémon first made its debut and started gaining traction in the US. I could have probably identified a Pikachu or a Poké Ball if pressed at that time but the Pokémon franchise largely remained a mystery to me, and one that I largely perceived to be little more than kids' stuff.

In 2016, my oldest daughter, who was turning eight years old, became interested in the
Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG)no doubt influenced by friends from school and their card collections. XYSteam Siege was the newest expansion set at the time and Volcanion the newest Pokémon (although unbeknownst to me, its existence had been leaked almost three years prior through the video games). It was this set that was most readily available in stores; this being before widespread retail shelf-clearing and card scalping. My daughter's foray into Pokémon was short-lived, and by the time she had lost interest in early 2017, she had only amassed a collection of about a thousand cards. My middle child, a daughter, skipped the Pokémon phenomenon almost entirely but my youngest child, a son, who was turning eight years old, became interested in the Pokémon TCG in 2020. His interest lasted about as long as my eldest daughter's and he had largely moved onto other things by early 2021. Volcanion had become my favorite Pokémon from day one, although my kids did not share in my admiration. While I had acquired a few odds and ends for myself while helping my kids acquire their own card collections, it really wasn't until 2024 that I revisited the world of Pokémon on my own terms and with only a single Pokémon character in mind: Volcanion.

The project you see here was originally intended to preserve and elaborate upon The
Pokémon Company International's long defunct Pokémon Trading Card Game XY—Steam Siege Expansion Set website from 2016. The official standalone site appears to have been in existence until 2020, at which point it was replaced by a subpage of pokemon.com with much less content, as seen here. Nearly the complete original website had been archived by Internet Archive's Wayback Machine in early August 2016 and hopefully now and for the forseeable future can be found here. However, since the massive DDoS attack upon Internet Archive on October 9, 2024 the Wayback Machine has been very slow and unreliable. As of November 10, 2024, the site as archived by Internet Archive can now be found mirrored here. This mirrored site remains a work in progress and is not entirely functional aside from the main page.

I was not aware of the official website when it was in existence, so all my work in preservation must be done retroactively. This project has since expanded to include all things Volcanion.
XYSteam Siege has come and gone, the anime Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel too. The hype has long since dissipated with some people looking back on them in veneration, others in disdain. Many look back at what they perceive to be failed potential; Pokémon Company's neglect of this Pokémon and time and time again of falling far short of expectations. Although I am told there is little continuity between the Pokémon video games, the card game, and the anime, I acknowledge all three mediums here because they all shed some light on this remarkable character.
